Laihian Mallas Ltd was founded in 1910 in Laihia in the Finnish West Coast 'Pohjanmaa' region of Finland. The company is a leading manufacturer of special malts and malt extracts. The company produces and packs malt products under its own label and as third party production. The company has its own in-house quality control and laboratory and complies with requirements of the ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and HACCP DS:3027 standards. Quality is based on first-class raw material delivered by contract farmers in the region.
Laihian Mallas produces malts of rye, wheat, barley and oats. The malts are light to dark colored inactive or active. The malt extracts are based on barley, rye and wheat. The rye and barley based malt and malt extract products are available as certified organic products.
The customers of Laihian Mallas typically use malts and malt extracts in bakery applications to give bread taste and color, sprinkled on the surface or other purposes as f.ex. flour strength adjustment. Reasons to use malt extracts in bread are longer shelf life, better flavor and color, better rising of dough, texture and consistency of crumb and better stability for frozen products. Of course malt extracts are natural so no E-codes are needed in labeling.
An important factor is also the enhanced nutritional value of malts compared to native grain. This is a result of the germination process in the malted grain which results in higher content of certain vitamins, sterols, soluble fiber and other substances.
Other application areas for malt products are in confectionery manufacturing and naturally in breweries.
